COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BEGINNING COASTAL PHOTOGRAPHY

An introduction to nature photography. Students learn perspective, subjects, lighting and framing techniques through field work, editing and photo projects. Cameras and developing included.

BOATS, BOATERS AND BOAT MODEL BUILDERS

Build a boat model of a tugboat, use museum exhibits and take field trips to learn about coastal waterways, local boats and the skills needed to work on and around the water.

COASTAL EXPLORERS

COASTAL ADVENTURERS

Daily field explorations of the local area museums, coastal trails, and beaches and learning to use outdoor skills. These Science to Sailing courses are designed to enable students participating in the Junior Sailing Programs starting June 9th or July 7th to have a full-day experience--half day of sailing and half day of Summer Science School. Students in the June class can participate in Junior Sailing in the morning and Coastal Adventurers in the afternoon, and students in the July class can take Coastal Adventurers in the morning and Junior Sailing in the afternoon. Students who register for Coastal Adverturers are NOT required to enroll in the Junior Sailing Program (and vice versa.) Students who are registered for both will have supervision from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm daily. For "full day" students, applications must be completed for both the Summer Science School class and a Junior Sailing Program session.

PIRATES

Explore the life of pirates at work, play and in battle through stories and special hands-on activities suitable for this age group.

SALTWATER SCIENCE

Under the guidance of NC National Estuarine Research Reserve staff students investigate wildlife and measure water quality while exploring coastal waters and ecosystems of the Rachel Carson Reserve.
