Beaufort Facility

Director
     Joe Schwarzer
Joe Schwarzer has thirty years experience in maritime history and nautical archaeology. He holds degrees from the University of Arizona and the State University of New York (SUNY) Binghampton and worked on conservation and exhibit installation of the Serce Limani, an 11th century shipwreck, at the Museum of Underwater Archaelogy/ Institute of Nautical Archaeology in Bodrum, Turkey.  Schwarzer is a founding director of the North Carolina Maritime Heritage Council and Chairman of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuaries Council.
Public Information Officer
     Michelle McConnell
Responsible for writing and disseminating news releases and feature articles to the media as well as providing information to the general public to promote the museum, its programs, activities and special events. Editor of the museum newsletter, The Waterline. A.A.S. in computer animation. Previously held positions as a Graphic Designer and Web Developer. Background in marketing, sales and project management.
Program Assistant
     Lori Duppstadt
Responsible for recruiting volunteers, coordinating volunteer training, volunteer events and assignments. Registers participants for museum programs.
Maritime Archaeologist
     David D. Moore
Nautical Archaeologist David D. Moore, B.A. in environmental marine science (UNC-W); M.A. in maritime history and nautical archaeology (ECU); over 25 years shipwreck excavation and research into colonial ship construction and naval architecture; artifact drawing and curation; directs recording operations on Queen Anne's Revenge Shipwreck Project; researching Blackbeard and pirates of the Carolinas since 1982; NCMM staff since 1996.
Business Office
    Assistant

     Cindy Jones
Responsible for accounts payable and receivable, purchasing, and bookkeeping. B.A. in Accounting from University of Pittsburgh.
Business Manager
     Bob Springle
Responsible for budgeting, accounting, computers, personnel, safety/security, and maintenance functions. Supervises clerical and maintenance staff, Museum Store manager, and Cape Lookout Studies Program coordinator. A.A.S. in business administration. Head of Administrative / Management Branch. Acting director 1997-98. On NCMM staff since 1975.
Museum Store Manager
     Sharon Resor
Responsible for selection of merchandise, management of operations, and supervision of employees in museum store. Joined the museum staff November 1996.
Natural Science Curator
  /Cape Lookout Studies
   Program Director

     Keith Rittmaster
Coordinates activities at the museum's field station on Cape Lookout National Seashore and directs a long term bottlenose dolphin photo-ID study. Collaborates with local and regional researchers on marine mammal and sea turtle research and conservation activities. B.A. - Denison University, Masters of Environmental Management - Duke University. USCG boat captain, Shellback, SCUBA diver, has worked in marine science since 1979.
Curator of Education
     JoAnne Powell
Education Branch Head. Supervises natural science curators and public information officer. Conducts in-museum programs, local and international field trips. Acting director 2002-03. B.A. in biology from University of California at Davis, Certified Environmental Educator (NC DENR - Office of Environmental Education) and certified science teacher (ECU.) In museum education since 1975. Special interests: coastal ecology, birds and marine fossils.
Curator of Science
     Jean Wilson Kraus
Curator of Natural Science Jean Wilson Kraus coordinates public programs and edits the museum Calendar of Events; conducts field trips and lectures in coastal natural history, coastal ecology and kayaking; Summer Science School instructor; authored two North Carolina coastal plant books, a chapter in Exploring N.C.'s Natural Areas, and illustrated plants for books about the Outer Banks; active in professional organizations. B.A. biology, Greensboro College; M.A. botany, UNC, Chapel Hill. Teaching, curatorial and botanical experience since 1974.
Associate Museum
   Curator

     Allison Besch
Responsible for scheduling, development, and coordination of education programs primarily for students and children. Conducts field trips and on-site programs in local coastal ecology and biology, and also serves as a Summer Science School instructor. Maintains natural science aquatic exhibits for the museum. B.A. in geology and environmental studies, Colgate University; M.E.M. in Coastal Management, Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, Duke University.
Museum Exhibit
   Designer

     Mike Carraway
Design and Exhibits Branch Head. Responsible for the design and development of the museum?s exhibition programs, support materials and the supervision of the graphics and technical staff. B.F.A. Communication Arts - East Carolina University; Over twenty years experience in museum exhibition and publication design.
Exhibit Technician
     Larry Copeland
Has worked as an Exhibit Technician for the museum since 1986. He has a combined 30 years of experience, based on full-time employment as both a house and trim carpenter, cabinetmaker, furniture maker, custom and specialty woodworker, and exhibit technician. At the museum, he successfully turns conceptual exhibit design drawings into completed exhibit structures and cabinetry which, often more than not, involve unconventional shapes and construction methods.
Exhibit Technician
     Terry Greene
Has been a permanent employee with the museum since 1989. Over the years he has earned the title of "the Museum's MacGyver". Along with his cabinet making and custom woodworking skills, he also has the ability to solve exhibit design problems involving electromechanical systems.
Curator of Maritime
   Research

     Paul E. Fontenoy
Head of Maritime Branch. Supervises museum collections, accessions, research library, North Carolina small craft collection, Watercraft Center; researches and reviews museum exhibits and publications. B.A. in history; M.A. in maritime history and nautical archaeology; Ph.D. in history, University of London; author; lecturer; reviewer; The Sloops of the Hudson River, plus numerous chapters, articles, and reviews.
Boatbuilder
      Craig Wright

Craig supervises all boat construction projects and teaches classes in traditional boatbuilding in the Watercraft Center. Over thirty years of experience. Several articles on construction techniques published. Contact Museum for information about boatshop programs.
Watercraft Center
  Technician/Boatshop
   Manager

     William Prentice
Oversees physical plant of the Watercraft Center, boatshop volunteers and small craft collection storage. Conducts Watercraft Center educational presentations and programming. Produces Carolina Maritime Model Society newsletter. Acting Watercraft Center Manager since September of 2001. A.A. Carteret Community College. On staff since 1986.
Collections Manager
     Darlene Perry
Responsible for the accession, maintenance, care, and security/safety of the museum's artifacts, photographic collection, and archival collection for the main museum in Beaufort. Oversees collection at the branche at Southport. Prepares museum artifacts for transport to loan to other museums and historic sites. The collections manager is also responsible for acquiring objects and documents relevant to the maritime history of North Carolina. B.S. in Public History from East Carolina University; M.A. in American History from East Carolina University.
Collections Registrar
     Frances Hayden
Responsible for registration and care of artifacts and manuscripts in the museum's collections; maintains computerized (Re:discovery software) collections records; maintains research library. B.A. in English (minor in history); involved in administration since 1972; retired from the Marine Corps in 1992.

Maintains buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles, and vessels in support of museum programs.
Southport Facility

Curator/Site Manager
     Mary E. Strickland
Supervises staff and manages museum, including finances, promotion, collections, fund raising, education, research, publications, exhibits, general construction projects, public events, maintenance, safety, and patron services. Business school graduate, corporate executive secretary, eight years director of the Southport Maritime Museum. Curator/branch manager of NCMM at Southport since 1999.
Southport Museum
   Store Manager

     Naomi Winkelman
Responsible for maintaining a profitable store inventory, performs clerical duties, assists the curator and the educator, assists with special events, and acts as receptionist to the public. Over 20 years combined retail/bookkeeping/small business experience. Hired as NCMM Southport store manager in 2003.
