Governing Authority
The North Carolina Maritime Museums are part of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, Office of Archives and History, Division of State History Museums. Cultural Resources receives operating funds for the museums through the State General Assembly, oversees compliance with state and federal regulatory guidelines, and sets policies congruent with the museums missions, long-range goals, and financial stability.

Management Structure

There are three locations: The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and also in Southport and the Graveyard of the Atlantic in Hatteras.

The maritime museums director is responsible for operations management, staffing, planning, coordination, finance, and leadership and reports to the director of the Division of State History Museums, who enacts broad divisional policy and ensures that the museum is in compliance.

The key staff areas are: Education, Maritime, Exhibits, and Administrative. A senior curator heads each branch, which includes necessary support staff. Education does outreach to schools and community, conducts field trips, develops summer educational programming such as Junior Sailing and Science Camp, and offers lectures and special events throughout the year. The Maritime Branch includes the museum's Watercraft Center in Beaufort, collections management, and maritime archaeology, and produces the annual Wooden Boat Show annual event in Beaufort. The Exhibits Branch includes layout and design, fabrication, exhibits maintenance and publication. The Administrative Branch includes museum gift shops, business operations and maintenance. The Cape Lookout Studies Program also falls within the Administrative Branch.
