Contact the Museum at (252) 728-7317 between 9AM and 5PM for information or reservations. Kevin Duffus, researcher, author & filmmaker discusses his new book “The Last Days of  Blackbeard the Pirate” followed by a book signing.  2 PM.

5 Wednesday Fall comes to the Croatan
Fall foliage, mushrooms & birds along short scenic trails in the Croatan National Forest. Reservations-$10. 9:30 AM-2 PM.

10 Monday-14 Friday Watercolor Workshop
Visitors may observe the workshop & exhibit instructed by Tom Francesconi, artist & teacher from Chicago. Participants are by invitation only.  9 AM-4 PM each day.

12 Wednesday What’s the Catch?
Consumers learn to make informed seafood choices at restaurants & markets. Dutch Treat lunch at a local restaurant (cost on your own). Reservations. 11 AM-1:30 PM.

15 Saturday-16 Sunday Waterfowl Watching Excursion
Excursion to Lake Mattamuskeet & Pea Island national wildlife refuges to observe wintering waterfowl. Overnight in Nags Head. Reservations-$40, FOM $35.
Saturday 8 AM-Sunday 7 PM.

18 Tuesday Cape Town to Etosha
Slides of wildlife, scenery & culture of southwest Africa. 11 AM.

19 Wednesday Ports & Pilots

6 Saturday Carolina Maritime Model Society
Meeting open to the public, auditorium. 2-4 PM. 

6 Saturday Christmas Flotilla
Boat parade begins in Morehead City at 5:30 PM & arrives in Beaufort about 6:15 PM. Awards follow at the Watercraft Center.

10 Wednesday Coastal Whales of North Carolina
Slides & display of these fascinating & threatened marine mammals that migrate along NC shores. 11 AM.

EXHIBITS

“Knights of the Black Flag” focuses on rogues who plied the waters along the eastern US and the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. (August 9 - Dec. 28)

“Our Sunken History: Archaeological Treasures from NC Shipwrecks” in the Repository at Gallants Channel includes a diorama of the QAR shipwreck, artifacts from Civil War blockade-runners, gunboats and rams, and a ship's stove and cooking pot. Tickets $5 adults, $2 children. Reservations by noon on the prior day. Call to schedule groups.

EVENTS

Cinema by the Sea completes the summer outdoor film series at Gallants Channel with “Transformers” (PG13). Tickets are $10 per carload, $2 walk-ins. Gates open at 7 PM to enjoy the view and refreshments before the movie begins at sunset. Visit Our Sunken History exhibit at the Repository, 7-8 PM. Rain date is the following Friday.  (Sept. 12, 7 PM)

Researcher, author and filmmaker Kevin Duffus will speak about his book, “The Last Days of Blackbeard the Pirate.” His maritime North Carolina works include “Shipwrecks of the Outer Banks” and “The Lost Light, a Civil War Mystery,” and his video, “War Zone-World War II off North Carolina’s Outer Banks.” (Oct. 2, 2 PM)

The Secrets of Blackbeard and the historical age of piracy are revealed by the continuing artifact recovery from the Queen Anne’s Revenge shipwreck presented by NCMM Nautical Archaeologist David Moore. (Oct 9, 2 PM)

Women Pirates, such as Anne Bonny & Mary Read, who became close friends, plied the east coast dressed up as men and just as fierce as the likes of Blackbeard. The presentation is by Connie Mason, Maritime Heritage Tourism Officer and former NCMM collections manager/historian. (Oct 22, 2 PM)

In 2007, Natural Science Curator Keith Rittmaster and his wife Vicky Thayer presented bottlenose dolphin biology and conservation talks at the International Society for Marine Mammalogy in Cape Town, South Africa.  His slide presentation Cape Town to Etosha focuses on scenery, culture and wildlife they encountered in southwestern Africa. The Cape Lookout Studies Program focuses on coastal marine research, conservation and education related to marine mammals and sea turtles. For information, contact Keith Rittmaster at 252-504-2452 or view www.capelookoutstudies.org.

The Traditional Small Craft Association gathers for the annual Fall In-The-Water meet at the Gallants Channel docks. The public may join this celebration of small craft and enjoy Spritsail skiff sailboat rides. All small boats are welcome.  Make reservations for the pig pickin’, $10 or $5 for TSCA members. Waterside After School features interactive exhibits and activities along the waterfront at Gallants Channel to celebrate “Take a Child Outside Week.” Group and individual reservations are required for this free event.  (Sept. 23, 4 - 6 PM)               

Fright Night at the Museum is a family event at a “haunted museum” with spooky activities, crafts and a children’s costume contest. Reservations $2. (Oct. 28, 5:30 - 7:30 PM)

A trip to Aurora to hunt for fossils will be scheduled with PCS Phosphate. Hardhats are required and participants must be over 18. Call for the date and reservations.

BOATING PROGRAMS
The Beaufort Oars Rowing Club uses fixed-seat rowing gigs and the Beaufort Oars Sliding Seat Program uses single shells for exercise, competition and fun. Family sailing on traditional skiffs or a 30' keelboat is available by reservation, and accommodates 2-6 people for 2-6 hours for $50 to $240. INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Field trips into coastal habitats may involve travel by boat or van, hiking, or wading in shallow water. Field attire includes comfortable clothes and closed-toed wading or hiking shoes (NO open-toed shoes allowed). Contact the education department for group programs or view www.ncmaritimemuseum.org. WATERCRAFT CENTER
The Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center, located across from the museum, is open for viewing wooden boat construction and restoration, and ship model building. The 35th Annual Wooden Boat Show week is April 26- May 2, 2009.

Boatbuilding Skills Classes are for novices and experienced woodworkers. Boatbuilding Carpentry is a prerequisite for the Boatbuilding classes. Build a Boat in a Day is for an adult/child team working from a pre-cut kit.

Museum Calendars are mailed four times a year. It is museum policy to register participants for programs after the calendars are in the mail. Paid trip fees confirm reservations and are not refundable later than five days before the program, unless the museum cancels. Please call between 8 AM and 5 PM weekdays for reservations for cancellations. No reservations can be taken via e-mail.

Members receive quarterly mailings of the Calendar and the Waterline newsletter and discounts on some programs and in the Museum Store. FOM denotes a discount for Friends of the Museum. Contact the Friends of the Museum to join.
